Bridal Fabrics

A complex migration from a proprietary e-commerce platform and Shopify theme development for a busy online retailer of fabrics and bridal lace.

Bridal Fabrics

Introduction

Bridal Fabrics boasts one of the largest selections of fabric and bridal laces in the UK. Recognising the limitations of their existing proprietary e-commerce platform, they decided to migrate to Shopify.

This move was driven by the need for a more flexible, scalable, and cost-effective solution to better support their extensive inventory and enhance their online shopping experience for customers.

I used an off-the-shelf theme as a starting point and implemented substantial modifications to accommodate the project's requirements.

Project

Challenges

The data migration proved to be quite complicated - the original site was built on an undocumented proprietary platform. The crux of the project involved working out how the get the data out of the original system and into a format that could be imported in to Shopify, mapping existing product attributes to Shopify product metafields.

The site offers consumer and trade pricing, however it was agreed that an app wasn't necessarily the best way to facilitate this. Instead, we wanted to use product variants to hold variable pricing data. Variants are also used to sell different lengths of fabrics, from metre quantities to fixed length pieces. This called for context switching when changing variants on the product page between cut length and fixed pieces.

As we were holding consumer and trade pricing in variants, I had to create a custom product feed so that only consumer prices were being sent to Google Merchant Center. I also created targeted product feeds for different markets, providing localised product listings in an effort to increase click through rates from overseas markets.

Project

Outcomes

Following the successful launch of their Shopify website, Bridal Fabrics has seen a substantial improvement in key performance indicators (KPIs). This includes a notable increase in sales, increased visitor traffic, and a higher conversion rate. These positive trends reflect the enhanced user experience and the effectiveness of the new site in meeting customer needs and driving business growth.

I am currently working with Bridal Fabrics on new projects and providing ongoing support. Our long-term partnership allows me to really understand and keep on top of their business needs, enabling us to consistently drive innovation and improvements, ensuring their site remains responsive to evolving market demands.
